The Difference Between Wanting and Wishing to Play the Piano

As I have stated many times before, I get so many people telling me that they would like to learn to play the piano. I would have heard it hundreds, if not, a few thousand times and I have learned that people don’t always mean what they say. Actually, when it really comes down to it, very few summon enough courage to get started. I get it – it can be really hard to get started.

There is indeed a difference between wanting to play the piano and people wishing to play the piano. People that wish to play the piano really mean that they would like the ability to be able to sit down at a piano and play instantly or be able to play proficiently within a week or two.

Those that really want to learn to play the piano are willing to put in time and effort to not only learn the basics but to improve their skill level. They are willing to endure the frustration of not getting things right the first time. They are willing to practice, even when it is inconvenient to them or they are just not in the mood. They are willing to try, then fail and try and then fail again and to do this over and over until they have success.

People wanting to learn to play the piano may sometimes even endure people discouraging them or telling them that they can’t be successful. There would even been the odd person had to endure being laughed at. Despite all the obstacles, whether it is the music itself, people around you or even life’s circumstances, they are willing to endure until they reach their goal.

So I hope it is clear which fits what category, or more importantly, which category do you fit in?

If you are willing to work to achieve what you define as successful, just remember this: It is the older generations of people that know how to work hard. There were no handouts, no free ride. It is the older generations that understand the concept of hard work and not just for a week or two, or even a month or two, but years or even decades. It is the older people that have the necessary knowledge and wisdom to learn to play the piano successfully. When I was a child, learning to play the piano, I really didn’t know what I was doing. All I really did was practice and not quit. I had no idea that I would actually end up being a piano teacher. It is the older generations that have what it takes to become successful.

If you really want to learn to play the piano, rather than wishing, take action and continue to take action because your success is almost guaranteed.
