I know that it seems like a strange statement to make, but It is my experience that it is the quick learners are the ones most likely to quit.
I would have seen it hundreds of times over the years, where a student would start to learn to play the piano and they would make very quick progress. It would seem like they are a complete natural at playing the piano and they probably are, but they would get to their first difficulty and all of a sudden they are talking about quitting. Sometimes it is just a matter of weeks later that they quit and all their potential and their eagerness comes to a screeching halt.
Conversely, I have also seen many students that are very keen to want to learn to play the piano and despite not finding it the easiest thing that they have ever done, will keep trying and keep practicing until they have mastered the new thing that they are trying. It doesn’t matter whether it is reading the notes, trying to get the right fingering, having issues with the timing, learning to play tied notes or play staccato, these students will just keep trying despite obstacles and frustrations. It is these students that usually never get a new concept the first time. Sometimes it will take many tries and several weeks of practice to learn a new skill or technique. Sometimes it will take several attempts for me to finally communicate and teach the new concept or technique, in a way that they can comprehend.
I think the ones that don’t find it easy to learn to play the piano, are the students that are most likely to continue learning and become successful according to their own personal idea of what it is to be successful, because they understand that learning to play the piano takes work. Playing the piano, like a lot of other skills, takes time and patience, and a whole lot of work. These students put up with frustrations and challenges because they know they need to work through those challenges in order to be able to play the piano.
I believe that the ones who find it easy to begin with and then find out later that there will be challenges along the way, don’t understand that work is involved and effort is needed. The end result is that they can become disillusioned and quit.
So if you are one of those people that are willing to put in the effort and actually work at improving your piano playing skills then you will become successful. It is guaranteed.
