Just Do It – Nike was right!

The catchphrase of ‘just do it’ proved to be a very successful advertising slogan, which they used for many years and they actually own the trademark for that slogan.

The origins of the phrase are a little dark, so I won’t share them with you because they would end up being a distraction, but it has proven to be a winning slogan and I’m not surprised.

I’m not surprised at the success of the slogan because it embodies so much in just three simple words. It conveys the message that you need to put away all the excuses and simply make a decision. Then you need to put in the action and keep putting in the action to get the desired results. It also subtly implies that there can be excuses, roadblocks and challenges along the way, but the answer to that is to keep on going.

This philosophy is not just good for sports or for getting fit/keeping fit, but it is also for doing things like learning to play the piano, because ultimately you are the one that has to actually do the work and practice. I can provide all the encouragement, all the tips and tricks, all the information that you will need, but at some point it is only you that can make the decision to learn and it is only you that can make the decision every day to practice and to keep going.

I understand that there are often some hurdles to overcome, in order to make it all happen, but if the end (being able to play the piano) is worth the effort, then get started  and don’t procrastinate.

Sometimes when people are looking at learning to play the piano, they want guarantees. Well I have two guarantees; the first one is that I can guarantee progress if you just keep practicing. The second guarantee is that you will not be able to play the piano ever, if you do not take action and just keep wishing you could play.

With a lot of things in life, especially the stuff we can procrastinate about, Nike had it correct when they told us ‘just do it’.
