The approach to learning modern piano is somewhat different than if you wanted to learn classical piano or jazz piano. Modern piano style is very much chord based, so knowing your chords are very important. Learning to read music, especially reading a melody line would definitely be useful for playing modern music, although not absolutely essential.
The first thing I would recommend is finding a piano teacher that is willing to teach modern piano. It is worthwhile mentioning that some piano teachers would not be willing to teach this genre of music, so it is always important to find out this information ahead of time. If there is no one that is local, remember that there are many piano teachers that now teach via zoom or skype, or a similar platform. I personally know of a few piano teachers that have students who live in other countries.
If you don’t want to go with having a piano teacher, there is plenty of resources available to you online. There are quite of subscription based platforms as well as whole YouTube channels dedicated to teaching people how to play the piano using a chord based approach, which modern music is.
Of the websites and platforms that teach you how to play the piano, I have not come across anything that is terrible. From what I have seen, all offer decent information and present it in a logical manner. Clearly, different programs appeal to different people. Personally, because I am Australian, I would prefer to hear an Australian accent from the presenter of the video lesson. This is because I sometimes find other accents a little distracting. As we are all different, with different personal preferences, what suits one person is not going to suit another.
If I was to recommend something, even if it is just a starting point in working out what will suit you, then I would recommend Pianote. They offer a lot of free videos on YouTube as well as having their own subscription to their website. In my opinion, they do a lot very well. It is important to note here that this opinion I give is my own and I have no association with Pianote and I am certainly not getting paid by them.
As there is just so much information online for people playing modern music, I would not bother with trying to find a suitable piano course book. I certainly have not come across a suitable one.
If you really want to play the piano and have huge difficulty in trying to read musical notation, then I would suggest learning to play modern, chord based music. This is because both classical and jazz piano really require you to be able to read music.
