Free Online Resources That Can Help You Learn to Play the Piano

There are so many resources online to help you learn or re-learn how to play the piano. In fact I would argue that maybe there are too many resources available that makes choosing very hard. There are obviously paid resources that you can choose to access, but there is also numerous options that are free.

I am sure that there is free material on some musicians’ or teachers’ or music company’s websites, but I think if you are looking for somewhere to scroll through your potential choices, then YouTube is definitely the place to go.

YouTube has many many videos on all sorts of aspects of learning to play the piano and there are many that are designed for the absolute beginner, who has no prior knowledge or experience. The videos that I had a look at seemed to be well presented and well explained. Most of the presenters in the videos I saw were very friendly and very encouraging (which is most important).

If you are looking to play modern music using chords, then there is an absolute plethora of videos to choose from. If you were looking for videos on playing jazz music then you need to specifically type into YouTube’s search bar ‘learn to play jazz piano’ in order to access numerous videos.

I put into YouTube’s search bar ‘learn to play classical piano’ and there were certainly some choice, but not surprisingly there was much less content available. It is disappointing because there are people like me who love to play (or want to play) classical piano.

I also searched in You Tube for videos about how to learn to play the piano by ear. The selection wasn’t massive, but there still looked like there would be good information available.

I know that I have very briefly touched on what is available on YouTube, but there would be other resources available as well, you just got to be prepared to spend some time doing research.

Even though having a piano teacher to have weekly lessons is the absolute ideal, making use of such platforms as YouTube can be really handy to get yourself started or explore what type of music that you want to play (if you are not sure). Watching videos may even be a way of gaining a little knowledge and a little confidence before committing to piano lessons.
