Not all the time and certainly not all content creators, but I have seen quite a number of YouTube videos that are aimed at teaching people how to play the piano, where there is some remark about the validity of different genres of music.
This does annoy me somewhat, because it is often a flipant remark about another genre being a waste of time to learn. It is ridiculous to think that one genre is better or more valid than another. All genres that you care to think of are valid, simply because there is a huge number of people that enjoy playing music from that genre. If the genre was not popular then the genre would soon be relegated to the history books.
I think that these content creators are doing themselves a disservice because they might have someone who is already fairly proficient with one genre, wanting to work on their skills to become proficient with another genre – their prefered genre that they are teaching.
I get annoyed at these remarks sometimes because sometimes, just sometimes, these remarks are somewhat snide. These creators are not the people who dictate taste in music and considering the narrowmindedness of some of them, I’m glad they are not.
The real truth of the matter is that all genres are valid. You do not have to like them all, nor do you have to play them all, but what you like to listen to and what you like to play is your business and no-one else’s.
For me personally, I love playing classical music and at this stage of my life, I am only interested in playing classical music. In the past, it has been a very different story – I have played quite a lot of popular music alongside the classical music. I have even learned the odd piece of music that falls under the category of jazz music.
The bottom line is that these content creators are wrong for making flippant or snide remarks about genres they probably have had little to no exposure to, or have spent any serious amount of time learning a particular genre. I don’t often like to say that people are wrong, both on this blog and in my personal life, but in this instance, I am saying that these creators are wrong for denigrating other genres.
