There are people who will never play the piano. Obviously it is a large group of people that have never, nor will ever have a desire to want to play the piano. This is normal and appropriate, especially since I have heard stories in years gone by, where kids were forced to take piano lessons, either because that is what the family expected or that there was a piano in the house and they were the designated person that should make sure the piano didn’t go to waste. Crazy, right?
People that should learn to play the piano are people that want to play the piano. I’m not talking about a person that wakes up one random morning and says to themselves that they should start learning to play the piano. I’m talking about the people that have had a desire to play, for years and for some, the desire has been there for decades. Because you are reading this, you would either fall into the category of someone who has wanted to play for years, or you are someone close to someone who has had a desire to learn to play the piano for years.
Unfortunately, not everyone who wants to play the piano will take action. There are people that would rather talk about it, than take any action. They might even be one of those people that enjoy complaining as a way of seeking attention, or a way of making themselves out to be a ‘victim’ because they never had the opportunity. They definitely have an attitude of ‘poor me’.
I do understand that circumstances can prevent you from taking action. Time is a big reason. When you are raising a family, there is not the time, and often no money spare to learn to play the piano. This is why I think that retirement is a great time to learn to play the piano. For most retirees, there are less of the responsibilities that take up so much time. I like to think of retirement as a season of second chances, where you can finally do the things you have been longing to do.
I also understand that there can be difficulties in getting started because a piano and a piano teacher can cost quite a lot – it can be much more expensive than other hobbies. However, there are ways to make it all so much cheaper. You could buy a keyboard instead of a piano – sure they are not nearly as good as a piano, but they are better than nothing. You could also access YouTube to learn what you need to learn. Again, this is not as good as having a piano teacher, but it is free and you can still learn quite a lot.
We all have circumstances that can get in the way of learning to play the piano, some more than others. However, you need to decide whether you are going to action or whether you are going to be one of those who perpetually complain about how they missed out. The choice is completely yours.
