Learning to play the piano doesn’t always have to be with a piano teacher. Even though I think it is the ideal option for anyone who is serious, there are other ways of learning to play the piano. You Tube can be a wonderful resource, especially if you are not quite decided whether you are going to pay for piano lessons.
Just like all other platforms, there are those content creators that do a really good job while others are not even worth your time. One piano player who knows his stuff is a man called Bill Hilton.
Bill Hilton material is available on a number of social media platforms but where I have looked at his material is on You Tube.
First of all I think Bill Hilton is knowledgeable and probably an experienced piano teacher. He has a series of videos aimed at teaching a complete beginner about how to play the piano. The videos are sequential and well ordered. They are filled with good information. Some might argue that there is perhaps too much information, but considering that videos can be paused or played multiple times, there is not too much information.
I think that his videos on You Tube are full of good content and because there is so much content, I think it is important to practice his recommendations thoroughly before moving on to the next video. My guess is that the average would be working on one video per week. If you decide to practice what Bill Hilton suggests and it takes you longer than a week for each step – don’t worry because progress is still progress.
Bill Hilton demonstrates everything on the piano and he does have an excellent way of explaining things. I also think that his voice is clear and pleasant to listen to.
There is only one downside that I can see with his videos and that is he doesn’t spend much time explaining how to read piano music.This is not to say that he ignores it entirely. He certainly doesn’t ignore how to read music, but my preference would be that he spends more time on the matter. If you are not interested at all, in learning to read music, then Bill Hilton’s You Tube videos would probably suit you immensely.
If you are looking for a way to learn the basic foundations of learning to play the piano, then You really can’t go wrong with looking at Bill Hilton’s You Tube channel. His videos are certainly worth your time.
