Learning to play the piano is hard simply because it takes coordination and skill to actually achieve success. It also takes hard work and patience and persistence. It can be annoying and frustrating at times, as well as deeply enjoyable and satisfying.
But let’s face facts here, there are a lot of things that could fit the above description. The first one that comes to mind is your job. How many years did it take you to really perfect your skills on the job to achieve a high level of efficiency? What about jobs that involve customer service – I think it would take a huge amount of skill to function efficiently in these types of roles, skill that would be acquired over a period of years not days or weeks. Even the boring repetitive jobs like factory work – I think it would take some serious effort to not go insane through sheer boredom.
If you are a parent, you know that parenting is really, really hard. Babies are not born with a manual and it takes everything that a parent has plus more to successfully raise children.
What about skills like cooking and gardening. Sure a lot of people obtain these skills but they do take time and effort (and a whole lot of trial and error) to become proficient with these skills. I know this because after many years, my cooking is best described as adequate, although I have improved from burning veggies in the microwave when I was 22 and I can only grow plants that are considered unable to be killed.
Lets look at hobbies. From playing all sorts of sports to woodwork to needlework, sewing, knitting and crocheting, as well as learning to play other musical instruments, could all be considered as hard to do. This is because these all need skills that take years to acquire and hone.
So what I am saying is that yes, learning to play the piano is hard, because it takes years to become really good at it, but so do many of the skills that you already have but you don’t even see how much you know and can do.
Learning to play the piano is just like any other skill set you have – you are going to need a bit of time and effort to reach the standard you want to reach. It is as simple as that.
